Your Ultimate Guide to Galvanized Piping

Everything you need to know about galvanized piping and when to replace it!

Some fun facts about galvanized piping:

  1. Galvanized piping was commonly installed in homes built before 1960

  2. Galvanized pipes are steel dipped in zinc in order to prevent corrosion and rust

  3. Over time, these pipes do end up corroding and becoming rusty. Rust tends to accumulate in the inside of the pipes, making the passage way smaller and ultimately compromising water flow.

How to Tell if Your Pipes are Galvanized?

Galvanized piping is typically and silver/gray color. If the pipes have aged, you will most likely notice rust on the exterior of the pipe as well.

Have a home that was built before 1960?

We recommend replacing any galvanized piping in your home, especially if your home was built before 1960. This is because the typical galvanized pipe lasts about 40 years. Any PEX or PVC material is a much more durable and reliable for your home and plumbing needs.
